Hamming it up: Townspeople stage church dinner for movie scene

Carrollton native Rick Hall, 49, has been in the area for the past week, filming scenes for his short film called "A Slice of Pie."

Hall wrote the script for the movie. He and producer Tim Reischauer, 50, and director of photography Toby Birney, 37, all of Los Angeles, have been shooting scenes for the past three weeks in the Carrollton, Jerseyville and St. Louis areas. Last week, they started shooting scenes at area businesses and a school.

Hollywood comes to Carrollton

Hall settled down to write the draft of the screenplay, and the men immediately began gathering the crew they would need. Reischauer knew Toby Birney, 37, who they chose to serve as director of photography on "A Slice of Pie." Birney recently worked as a camera operator on the upcoming Ed Zwick film, "DEFIANCE" and has worked on many other independent films.

"I really liked the script, and it's a movie I would be proud to show my family," Birney said. "And I really wanted to work with Rick and Tim."

Capturing Vilnius in 45 seconds

“The first step in creating this commercial was to build and record a scratch soundtrack, which helped us draw up the storyboards and get everyone on the same page creatively,” the director explains. “We tried to think of sounds that could be supported visually. Linas combined my ideas with his and we set out to create a soundtrack that could almost be described as a pop-soundscape.”

Ulvydas then set up a visual team to create images of Vilnius that would portray the city and its people without being overtly romanticized or “too much like a series of postcard shots, as many commercials of this genre tend to come across.”

Toby Birney, who acted as director of photography when filming the commercial, was impressed at once by Ulvydas’ work.

-Toby, kaip pirma karta atsidurei Lietuvoje?
-Pirma karta atvykau i Lietuva 1997 metais. Dirbau Lietuvos kino studijoje, kur buvo filmuojamas amerikieciu TV serialas „Nauji Robino Hudo nuotykiai“. Visuomet svajojau dirbti ivairiuose kraštuose, todel iškart priemiau pasiulyma važiuoti i Lietuva. Tikejau, kad tai bus nauja gyvenimo patirtis. Apie Lietuva nieko nežinojau, todel nenutuokiau, ko ir tiketis. Mokejau tik truputi istorijos, ir kur ta šalis yra žemelapyje. Bet nieko daugiau. Taigi atvažiavau ir dirbau tris menesius. Kitais metais vel vyko serialo pratesimas ir aš vel atvykau dirbti i Lietuva... Ir... isimylejau lietuve moteri.
